Search results increasingly answer the question on the page. For a lot of informational content, the traffic that used to arrive now does not, because the answer was given without a click. This is worth understanding before you invest in content, because it changes which content is worth writing.
Which pages lose traffic
- Simple factual answers. Definitions, conversions, opening hours, dates. These were always thin traffic and are now mostly gone.
- Generic how-to content with no specific expertise behind it. The overview summarises it and nobody clicks.
- Listicles that restate what other listicles say.
Which pages still earn the click
- 01Anything requiring a decision. "Which platform should I use" is not answerable in three sentences, and people click through to reason it out.
- 02Pages with proprietary information: your prices, your process, your data, work you did.
- 03Tools and calculators. An answer cannot replace something interactive.
- 04Content with a point of view. Summaries flatten opinions, and people click to see who said it.
- 05Anything where trust matters before spending money. Nobody hires a studio from a summary paragraph.
What this means for a services business
It is mostly good news, if you write the right things. Your buyers are making a considered, expensive decision, which is exactly the category that still involves clicking through and reading. What has died is the traffic that was never going to hire you anyway.
The strategic shift: fewer, deeper pages tied to what you actually do, rather than volume aimed at broad informational terms. Ten pages that answer real buying questions will outperform a hundred generic posts, and cost less to maintain.
Being the cited source
When an assistant answers instead of linking, it usually names its sources. That citation is the new impression, and it is earned the same way: a specific, quotable claim on a page structured clearly enough to extract.
Practically, that means leading with the answer rather than building up to it. If your page opens with three paragraphs of context before the useful sentence, it will be summarised without you.
What to measure now
Impressions and clicks are drifting apart, and that is expected rather than a fault. Watch impressions for visibility, clicks for the pages that still pull, and enquiries for what actually matters. A page that generates two enquiries a month beats one that generates two thousand visits and nothing else.
